More than 50 years ago, I “tried out” for one of the baseball teams Johnny coached. I am certain that few kids he encountered over the years had as little talent as I did, and I never made the team. But his patient teaching and constant encouragement kept me trying, and I eventually made my high school team and went on to pitch at Vandy, a dream fulfilled with the special help of Johnny Piper. May God grant him rest and eternal peace.
