It is with broken hearts, but with deep gratitude for a life so beautifully lived, that we announce the passing of Adrianne Jeanne Thomas, who entered into the presence of her Heavenly Father on July 7, 2026, at the age of 78.
Born on November 26, 1947, in San Diego, California, to Edith Marie and Gordon Edward Doll, Adrianne lived a life defined not by the places she called home, but by the people she loved. She eventually settled in Ocklawaha, Florida, but her heart was forever connected to the memories she made in California, Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, and throughout the many places life led her.
Like the stories she loved to read, Adrianne's life was filled with moments of great joy, seasons of heartbreaking loss, unwavering faith, quiet strength, and a lifelong devotion to the people she loved most.
On December 17, 1965, Adrianne married William David McClain, a proud United States Marine from Winchester, Kentucky. Together they welcomed their two beautiful daughters. Their life together was tragically cut short when William made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his country in Vietnam on May 16, 1968. Although his life was taken far too soon, the love they shared remained a part of Adrianne's heart for the rest of her life.
Later that year, on November 12, 1968, Adrianne married Jerald Thomas, a proud United States Navy veteran who also served his country during the Vietnam War. Together they welcomed their two sons. They built a loving home centered on faith, family, and perseverance. Through the years, Adrianne and Jerald shared the joys and challenges of raising a family, creating a lifetime of memories that became an important part of her story.
Throughout every chapter of her life, Adrianne remained a woman of quiet strength, unwavering grace, and deep compassion. Whether facing joy or hardship, she always placed the needs of her family before her own, leaving behind a legacy of love that will continue for generations.
Adrianne's greatest accomplishment and deepest joy was her family. She was a proud and devoted mother to Leslie Evonne Gray of Bluffdale, Texas; Leisa Meachell Miller of Ocklawaha, Florida; the late Heath Jerome Thomas of Royal Palm Beach, Florida; and Lee Jay Thomas of Springfield, Tennessee. Her children's spouses—Clyde Gray, husband of Leslie; Dellun "Curtis" Miller, husband of Leisa; Gia Thomas, Heath's beloved widow; and Denise Thomas, Lee's wife—were never simply in-laws to her. She embraced each of them as family, loved them wholeheartedly, and was grateful for the happiness they brought to her children.
She was an incredibly proud grandmother to Jessica Gahan, Ellen Brooks, Savanah Miller, Billie Dee Bullock, Charlotte Jacoby, Allie Burnette, Dustin Thomas, Dillion Thomas, Geoffrey Smith, Jacob Smith, and Courtney Smith. Becoming a great-grandmother brought even more joy to her life. Robert, Noah, Graicelinn, Carter, Brooke, Bryson, Braylen, Benjamin, Olivia, Layla, and TJ were each loved beyond measure. Every phone call sharing exciting news, every milestone, every birthday, and every accomplishment filled her with pride because nothing made Adrianne happier than seeing her family thrive.
She is also survived by her brother, Jim Doll, and her nieces, Sherry and Delora. She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands, William David McClain and Jerald Thomas; her beloved son, Heath Jerome Thomas; her sister, Linda Marie Sauer; her brother, Steven Gnagy; her brother-in-law, Joe Sauer; and her stepsister, Joleen Rice.
To know Adrianne was to know genuine kindness. She was soft-spoken, caring, generous, and selfless in ways that often went unnoticed because she never sought recognition. She believed in lifting people up, celebrating their victories, and encouraging them through life's difficult moments. No matter what someone was facing, Adrianne always seemed to know exactly what to say. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel heard, loved, and important.
She also possessed a sense of humor that was entirely her own. She loved to say, "My sense of humor is off the wall and off the cuff," and anyone who knew her would agree. It wasn't unusual to receive a knock-knock joke or a random one-liner from her at one o'clock in the morning simply because she thought it would make someone laugh. During family games of Uno and Rummy, she would slip into funny voices, invent hilarious characters, and have everyone laughing until they could hardly catch their breath. Those moments became treasured memories that her family will carry forever.
Music was one of Adrianne's greatest joys. She loved turning the music up loud, rolling the windows down, and singing along without a care in the world. Whether she was out for a drive or simply enjoying the moment, music had a way of bringing a smile to her face. She also loved to dance, admired the timeless beauty of classic automobiles, and could often be found with a paperback Western novel in her hands. When she wasn't reading, she enjoyed watching classic Westerns and never passed up a good action movie. She loved stories of courage, perseverance, and adventure, and those interests reflected the strength and spirit that she carried throughout her own life.
Above all, Adrianne was a devoted Christian whose faith was the foundation of her life. She faithfully read her Bible every day and found strength, peace, and hope in God's Word. Her favorite verse was John 3:16, which she carried in her heart throughout her life:
"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16, KJV)
Her unwavering faith shaped the way she lived and loved—with kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and grace. While her family mourns her absence, they find comfort in knowing that she is now at peace in the presence of the Lord she faithfully served.
She had an incredible love for history and never passed up an opportunity for a friendly debate. If someone shared a historical fact that wasn't quite right, Adrianne was quick to set the record straight. She enjoyed researching, learning, and proving her point, and when she did, that unmistakable giggle would always follow. It was impossible not to smile right along with her.
Her compassion extended beyond people. She also had an enormous heart for animals. Throughout her life, her dogs were cherished members of the family. Rosie and Honey welcomed her in Heaven, while Pepper and Tank remain a reminder of the unconditional love she gave so freely. To Adrianne, they were never "just pets." They were family.
Her generous heart reached far beyond her own home. She faithfully supported organizations that reflected the values she held dear, including Paralyzed Veterans of America, Marine Corps Toys for Tots, Boys Town, and charities supporting the Lakota people. Giving to others was never something she talked about, it was simply part of who she was.
Those who knew Adrianne will always remember some of the little sayings that became part of her legacy. "There's a place for everything and everything has a place," she would remind her family. But perhaps the phrase they will hear in their hearts forever is, "How soon can you be ready?" Those words usually meant she was ready for an adventure. Whether it was an unexpected drive, a spontaneous outing, or simply trying her luck because the evening felt too quiet, Adrianne believed life was meant to be enjoyed and shared with the people you love.
The world feels a little quieter without her laughter, her encouragement, and her wonderfully unique personality. Yet her family finds peace in knowing that her faith has become sight. They take comfort in believing she has been joyfully reunited with her Heavenly Father, her loved ones who have gone before her, and with her husbands William and Jerald. What a beautiful reunion that must have been.
Adrianne's greatest legacy will never be found in anything she owned, but in the lives she touched. She taught her family to laugh often, love deeply, be kind without expecting anything in return, and never miss an opportunity to tell the people you love just how much they mean to you.
She will be missed beyond words, remembered with every laugh she inspired, and loved for all the days of our lives. Though she is no longer by our side, she will forever remain in our hearts, and we look forward to the day we are together again.
A celebration of Adrianne's life will be held at Springfield Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, 4005 Memorial Boulevard, Springfield, Tennessee 37172 between the hours of 11am and 2pm. Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating the life of a remarkable woman whose love, laughter, and kindness will never be forgotten.
