Obituary

Neil Walter Petersen, a husband, veteran, and dedicated community leader passed away peacefully in his home on May 29, 2026.

Neil was born in Portland, Oregon on June 19, 1942 to Francis L. “Pete” and Marjorie Petersen. He was baptized at Alberta Evangelical United Brethren Church in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from California State University Long Beach with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army, exemplifying the principles of duty, honor, and service as Army rank Sp5, Security classification “top secret crypto “. He served at Supremu Headquarters Allied Powers Europe and Headquarters United States Army Vietnam.

He married the love of his life, Jo Ann Petersen, on August 13, 1971, after they met while attending Control Data computer classes. Neil retired from the City of LA, working as the information systems manager for the World Port of LA.

Upon his retirement, Neil sought a new venture and fulfilled a dream of owning a radio station. With the encouragement of his wife, who suggested he look near her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, he became the owner of WSGI and WDBL AM radio stations in Springfield, TN.

Neil's dedication to public service was evident through his extensive civic involvement. He served on the Board of Directors of the Robertson County Chamber of Commerce, the Springfield-Robertson County Airport Board of Directors, and the Bransford Community Center Board. He was also on the building and renovation committee for the Stokes Brown library, an active member of the Kiwanis club of Springfield, and the Amateur radio club. He regularly attended Springfield Baptist church and Tom Onstot’s Sunday school class.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Francis L. “Pete” and Marjorie Petersen. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Petersen, his 2 brothers, Roger (Tomoko) Petersen, and Jon (Connie) Petersen, and many nephews and nieces.

Neil will be remembered for his character, leadership, generosity, and steadfast commitment to the community he proudly served. His contributions have left a lasting impact on Robertson County, and his memory will continue to be honored by those whose lives were enriched through his friendship, service, and example. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A graveside memorial will be held at Springfield Memorial Gardens on Friday, June 19 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Springfield Veterans Service Office at 602 E 8th Ave Suite 102.
