Obituary

Peggy Jean Lipscomb Walker, 92, died Oct. 6, 2026, at her home in Nashville, Tennessee. Raised on a Robertson County farm, she became an English teacher and, later, principal of Holy Rosary Academy in Donelson.

She was born in Coopertown, Tennessee, to James and Carlene Lipscomb and grew up with two brothers and a sister on the family’s dairy and tobacco farm. Her Tennessee roots went back to the early 1800s, and the family lived in a rambling country house built by her father’s grandfather.

She attended all 12 grades at Coopertown School, where she edited the school newspaper, starred in basketball and graduated as valedictorian. She was voted Most Athletic and Most Likely to Succeed, and she served as Queen of Coopertown’s annual Harvest Carnival.

Her father encouraged her to coach basketball, but she majored in English. She graduated summa cum laude from Austin Peay State University with a degree in English and history. She later studied at Aquinas College, Peabody College, Belmont University, Tennessee State University and the University of Northern Colorado, and she earned a master’s degree in education from Trevecca Nazarene University.

After college she moved to Donelson and taught English at Donelson High School. She then spent 21 years as a full-time homemaker before returning to teaching in 1978.

She joined Holy Rosary Academy as a junior-high English teacher. Over the following two decades she served as director of curriculum, vice principal, interim principal and academic dean, and she was then named principal.

A member of the National Catholic Educational Association and the National Council of Teachers of English, she was named Teacher of the Week by an area publication in 1989 and was nominated for the NCEA Distinguished Teacher Award in 1994.

She was volunteer coordinator and a reading lab volunteer at Donelson Elementary School, a member of the Donelson-Hermitage Chamber of Commerce, a board member of the Nashville Aquatic Club and the Nashville Swim League, and a member of the Ravenwood Club’s Swim Committee. She taught Sunday school at Holy Rosary. Her favorite pastimes were antiques, literature and her grandchildren, and the sports page remained her preferred reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Carlene Lipscomb, and her grandson Jake Batcheldor.

She is survived by her son Mark Walker (Laura) and her daughter Melanie Batcheldor; grandchildren Erin Holt (Brad), Michael Walker (Catie), Michael Ng (Devon), Nicholas Ng and Anna Batcheldor; great-grandchildren Jaxon Batcheldor, Jayci Batcheldor, Aiden Ng, Hudson Ng and Elizabeth Walker; and siblings Betty Alley (Robert), Bobby Lipscomb (Amelia) and Buddy Lipscomb (Linda).

At the family’s request, services will be held privately for family and invited guests.
