Captain William Major Yates, age 85, of Springfield, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026. Born on April 1, 1943, William lived a life defined by service, humility, and an unwavering love for his family and community.

A lifelong resident of Springfield, William graduated from Bransford High School before beginning a distinguished 38-year career with the Springfield Fire Department. Rising to the rank of Captain, he retired in 2011 after decades of faithfully serving and protecting the people of Robertson County. More than a firefighter, William was someone his community could depend on. He was known for his calm presence, quiet strength, and willingness to put others before himself, leaving a lasting impact on both his fellow firefighters and the families he served.

William shared 59 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Rose Mary. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and creating lasting memories. Whether listening to music together, working side by side on Christmas displays, or simply enjoying each other's company, their love was evident to everyone who knew them. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who treasured every opportunity to spend time with his family.

He is survived by his children, Terry (Diane) Yates, Teresa (Jimmy) Payne, and Major (Kim) Yates; his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother, Melvin Yates; and his sister, Beverly Merkerson.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rose Mary Yates; his parents, Major Bert and Etha Pearl Yates; his son, William V. Yates; his daughter, Mary L. Moore; and several brothers and sisters.

Outside of work, William found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved fishing at Cheatham Dam and the marinas of Panama City Beach, where deep-sea fishing became one of his favorite pastimes. Tuesday night poker games with his son became a cherished tradition, and he rarely missed the chance to watch a good basketball game.

Christmas held a special place in William's heart. For many years, he designed and built wooden Christmas displays to raise money for Toys for Tots, a tradition he began at the Springfield Fire Department. Seeing those displays throughout Springfield each holiday season brought him great pride, knowing they helped provide Christmas gifts for children while continuing to brighten the community year after year. His generosity and creativity made Christmas a little more special for countless families.

William will be remembered for his servant's heart, steady character, and the kindness he showed to everyone he met. His legacy lives on through the family he loved, the community he faithfully served, and the many lives he touched along the way.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate William's life on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Springfield Memorial Gardens, Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 4005 Memorial Boulevard, Springfield, Tennessee. A Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 p.m., with burial at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Cedar Hill at 3:30 p.m.

Though William's presence will be deeply missed, his example of service, generosity, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the Springfield community he was proud to call home.
