Aubrey Wooten

August 12, 1952 — October 10, 2021

Springfield

Aubrey “Clay” Wooten, 69, passed peacefully on Sunday, October 10, 2021 following a 3-year battle with cancer. Born in Springfield, Clay was the son of the late Aubrey H. “Pete” Wooten and Myla Ann “Sweetie” Couts Wooten. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Larry Eugene Wooten and Patricia Ann Wooten; grandmother, Mattie Lee Harper Couts; grandfather, Walter William Couts; and uncles and aunts, Douglas Morton Couts, Moses Harper Couts, Virginia Couts, Corrine Couts, Emma Irene Couts (Moses) and Nadine Lauderdale Couts (Doug). Clay graduated from Springfield High School with the Class of 1970. He was licensed in Cosmetology and Barbering. He also graduated from the Sheffield School of Interior Design in 1992. He was the owner of the former Hair Village in Springfield. He had also worked for many years and retired from Dillard’s Salon. Clay had been an active communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. From 1973 until four years ago, he was involved in religious education (CCD and Sunday School). He taught everything from 3rd grade through high school, confirmation preparation, and RCIA (the instruction of adults wanting to become Catholics). Sometimes he taught alone, sometimes team teaching. For several decades he was a member of the choir and one of the leaders of the children’s choir. For about 30 years, he and Andrea Covington were responsible for preparing the sanctuary for the liturgical celebrations: Holy Week, Easter, Christmas, Pentecost, and others. He helped start the first Vacation Bible School at Our Lady of Lourdes. He regularly took classes through the diocese to maintain certification as a religious education teacher and to hone his teaching skills. Clay provided the family with years of his research of his family’s genealogy. He will be remembered for his kind heart and selfless generosity as he cared for those around him. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Faye Wooten Cianos; niece, Andrea Denise Smith; nephew, Stephen Anthony Smith; niece Cindy Wooten Bilyeu; and sister-in-law, Billie Jo Wooten. He was dearly loved by 6 great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. The family expresses their special thanks to three dear friends who lovingly cared for Clay during his illness: Diane Coppock, Chris Hamsley, and Rose Mary Reed. Visitation will be held at Springfield Funeral Home on Monday, October 18, 2021 from 12 noon until 2 pm. A celebration of life service for Clay will follow at 2 pm with interment at Springfield Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church or to Palestine United Methodist Church.
